Soyeon’s Journey on Produce 101
In January 2016, Soyeon participated in Mnet’s survival show called Produce 101 along with Kwon Eun-bin and Lee Yoon-seo as trainees from Cube Entertainment. She trained for 1 year and 6 months before joining the show. They were assigned to class A for performing 4Minute’s “Crazy.”
During the group battle evaluation, Soyeon teamed up with Ahn Ye-seul, Kim So-hee, Lee Chae-rin, and Kim Seol-ah. Soyeon was the leader, center, and rapper of Group 1. The group sang to Sistar’s “Push Push.” Fans were amused with their performances and praised Soyeon for her rap. They left comments such as, “the rapper (the one with the hat) is so charismatic, I can’t take my eyes off her,” and, “The Cube rapper is like a combination of 4Minute’s Hyuna and AOA’s Jimin <3”.
During position evaluation for rap, she chose “Turtle Ship,” the most hip-hop song among the evaluation songs in the rap category. She teamed up with Kang Ye-bin, Sim Chae-eun (Starship), and Hwang Soo-yeon.
Fans were captivated by their stage performance. Take a look at the comments to Soyeon’s rap in their performance:
not gonna lie, she’s the best rapper.. Her rapping skills and stage presence are undeniable. Am I the only one confused why people dislike her? She is clearly talented and shows a strong passion for rapping. To be honest Jeon Soyeon got so far because of pure talent (starting from episode 1) and not from her looks or how well she acts in front of a camera. She is extremely unique! she is the best rapper in this show!!!
On concept evaluations, Soyeon performed San E’s “Don’t Matter” along with Kim Hyung-eun, Lee Soo-hyun, Lee Hae-in, Kim Jun-na, Kwon Eun-bin, and Kim Seo-kyung.
Soyeon’s fan-cam:
Prior to the final episode, she showed her own rap which captivated fans on HipHop TV! The video shows other participants as well. They were having fun together during their break.
Despite being the only Cube member to make it to the end, she was unable to make her debut with I.O.I and finished in 20th place with a total of 78,058 votes.
She was very popular throughout the show, hitting a peak of tenth place in the fifth episode. Sadly, she was unable to reach the top. Soyeon, on the other hand, found her own way to make her debut and returned to her agency, Cube Entertainment. In the video of the trainees’ letters to the trainers, she was originally a fan of Cheetah’s teacher. She was so happy to be taught and said that she wanted to rap with them later. Cheetah was impressed by Soyeon’s skills when she wrote her own raps for songs. She stated, “I also read a 100-day letter, which I practiced since I was in elementary school, but I was proud of my hard work when no one paid attention to me, and if I gave up then, I would have just watched TV and envied others.” Great Job, Soyeon!
