Strawberry Milk’s Debut Era
On October 15th, 2014, Strawberry Milk posted on the official SNS, “Everyone, D-day has come and Crayon Pop’s Unit Strawberry Milk’s official debut is finally released today. I’m excited and nervous. I prepared hard while thinking of the fans, so please support me a lot. Strawberry Milk – “OK”, Fighting. Thank you. – Choa, Wei,” completed with a photo. In the released photo, Choa and Wei are promoting their debut title song “OK”, by posing ‘OK’ with their fingers with a cute and refreshing smile. In particular, since they are identical twins, only their hairstyles are different, but they have managed to captivate the fans and the public with their cute and girly appearance. Strawberry Milk’s debut song “OK” is a song created by Peter Pan, Shinto, Crazy Park (Park Hyun-joong) of the agency Crazy Sound and expresses the feeling of the ideal type of a boy that has been drawn only in imagination and expresses the cute girl’s emotions while liking a boy. On the other hand, all the songs on Strawberry Milk’s debut mini-album were released on various music sites on the same day as their debut and the hard copy was released on October 16th, 2014. In addition, their debut showcase was held at Ilji Art Hall in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, at 4 PM. Twin members of Crayon Pop’s ChoA and Wei formed the unit group under the name of Strawberry Milk and held a showcase stage. Prior to this, the music video of their debut song “OK” was released at 12 PM, while the group was in the middle of having their debut showcase. “If Crayon Pop has a tomboy image with cuteness, Strawberry Milk has a feminine image,” they said on the showcase. It is explained that they are more focused on femininity rather than the bizarre image of the existing Crayon Pop. At the showcase, they showed for the first time the stage of the title song “OK” and Wei’s own song “Let Me Know”. The title track “OK” is a dance song that shows a feeling of the perfect ideal that fell in love at first sight and is expressed in the cute lyrics. At the showcase for the release of their 1st mini-album, MC Yoon Sung-ho asked, “Aren’t the other members [Crayon Pop] jealous of the debut of this subunit?” “There was no such thing,” Strawberry Milk answered. “Because we are the first members who were making a unit, we were worried about how people will tell us apart since we’re twins,” they said.
Meanwhile, in this mini-album of Strawberry Milk, besides “OK”, there are also the songs “Feel So Good”, “Hello”, and “Let Me Know”, for a total of 4 songs included in the tracklist.
Strawberry Milk’s Music Video
Strawberry Milk’s “OK” music video was uploaded on the same day as their debut showcase, which was October 15th, 2014. The music video looks very feminine with a very cute concept and depicts the characters of ChoA and Wei very well. This easy-listening song also looks very aesthetic with the music video uploaded so far that it has managed to reach 8.8 M views on the YouTube channel. In one of the episodes uploaded by Strawberry Milk’s Wei on her YouTube channel, she took the time to explain the choreography and also the concept of the debut of Crayon Pop’s subunit, which is Strawberry Milk, and also their debut song titled “OK”. As previously explained, Strawberry Milk is a subunit with ChoA and Wei as members who also have cute but somehow a feminine side added to it.
Strawberry Milk’s Wei also explained that they also like milk, so this subunit also represents their characters well. Beside that, she also explained that they did their own make-up and hairstyle when they debuted as Strawberry Milk. Wei and ChoA also took the time to go to Dongdaemun to find clothes and make their own costumes. They also explained what it was like behind the scenes when they were shooting Strawberry Milk’s music video “OK”, and what they had to go through. During the first scene, they appear and bounce on the bed. Strawberry Milk’s Wei explains that the two of them were actually holding onto the rod until it fell as soon as the director said, “Cut!” They also said that what they had to do was enough to scare them so that both of their arms were trembling because the scene had to be repeated several times to get the right shot. Strawberry Milk’s ChoA also explained that in the middle of their shooting location for the “OK” music video there was a large pink room like a Barbie doll’s house and she really liked the setting because it was so pretty. Then, Strawberry Milk’s Wei added that the music video team at that time was really famous in the idol industry and could cooperate well according to personal requests given by Wei and ChoA. “It’s one of the high-quality songs because it was made by a famous team,” Strawberry Milk’s Wei said. When one scene shows surprising choreography, Strawberry Milk’s Wei immediately provides clarification about it because, at that time, there were many people who wondered why did she lift her skirt up. Then, she explained that actually she and her choreography teacher wanted to give a point choreo at the ‘My gosh’ (in Korean is ‘Omona’) part. “We really wanted to give a point at that part, so we were thinking which choreo should we do and our teacher suggested a choreography and we actually worried when she suggested it,” she said. “But we couldn’t say our opinions out loud and tell her it’s too something… So, all we did was practice hard at that time. We wanna apologize to those people who felt uncomfortable at that part,” Strawberry Milk’s Wei also bid her apology. They also talked about how they made additional properties such as the forks they brought in the music video. The property is handmade with foil with clothes on the inside, then a funny thing happened when they had to wear the property and it would always bump into other singers when they would walk to the stage. While the strawberry that is on top of their hair is actually a scrubber that can be purchased at Daiso. Even the original choreography for “OK” is actually more difficult than what has been made, but because the outfit and also the movements are not suitable, they decided to change the choreography on the filming site to be easier so that it can be followed by others. In the episode, Strawberry Milk’s Wei and ChoA took the time to read comments on YouTube where they had reached 2 million views on their first broadcasting video while having a debut stage on M Countdown in October 2016. “Idol songs are actually a competition, so we tend to make more unique and hook songs. Because if we don’t, we won’t have any agency to promote us as idols. I think that’s why there were also idols with unique concepts aside from us at that time,” Strawberry Milk’s ChoA explained to her viewers on YouTube. Strawberry Milk’s Wei and ChoA also said that they have also seen some K-Pop idols who like the “OK” choreography and showed their appreciation and support from fellow musicians as well as fans who responded positively to their debut at that time.
