U-KISS’ Soohyun’s Facts
U-KISS’s Soohyun Became the Group Leader
Shin Soo-hyun was a soccer player in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. In addition to sports, he also often joined various singing contests which eventually led him to becoming an idol. He was a trainee under Good Entertainment and JYP Entertainment. In 2006, he transferred to NH Media and made his official debut as a member of the group U-KISS. Soohyun was part of the original six members of U-KISS along with Alexander, Kibum, Eli, Kevin, and Dongho. They debuted on August 15, 2008, in Japan. Then, they also made their debut in South Korea on August 28, 2008. In 2011, Soohyun was appointed as the leader of U-Kiss. Fans gave him the nickname “King of Fanservice” because he always pays attention to his fans and makes them happy whenever he finds free time. In 2012, he was nicknamed the “Power Vocal” of the group. He also released “Snowman” as his first digital solo single. After a long period of time of having his career as a member of U-Kiss, it was difficult to maintain a position in Korea due to frequent replacements and withdrawals of members and focus on overseas activities. Even in difficult circumstances, Soohyun was protecting the team until the end as the original member and leader of U-Kiss. Through an interview that was held by News 1 Korea on August 8, 2020, U-Kiss’ Soohyun revealed about his feelings after 12 years of promoting, saying, “There were many times when I really wanted to quit in the middle. There were times when I was very tired and didn’t feel rewarded. At the beginning of my debut, I wanted to be recognized by the company. Since I was a trainee, I practiced and debuted by riding the last train between Pocheon and Seoul, but I didn’t think I could show a good stage.” “Then, I went abroad and promoted, but nonetheless, all the members desperately wanted to do better in Korea. For a long time, the team had many ups and downs. In that situation, I blamed myself a lot.” “After ‘Man Man Ha Ni,’ I received the position as the leader, and I took over, but the feeling of pressure increased. I should have done better as a leader, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. Did I not do it?” “I blamed myself a lot. But, the fans said thank you for sticking with it. It feels good to see that the hard times are over and now the light is shining. Thank you for recognizing this. There was a time of hardship, suffering, and perseverance, but it feels rewarding to come back like this,” he said. On April 16, 2021, U-Kiss’ Soohyun announced he was separating from the agency NH EMG after 13 years together. This news was also informed directly by Soohyun through a letter he wrote himself and shared on Instagram. “Hello, this is Soohyun. Thanks to everyone’s support and love, I can spend every day busy and happy. First, I want to thank the fans who continue to support me even in these difficult times,” Soohyun opened. “This year marks my 13th year of promotion as U-Kiss’ Soohyun,” he added. Because he had to leave the agency, Soohyun expressed his gratitude to the fans and staff from the agency who had been supporting him all this time by saying “I want to express my gratitude and love to all the fans who have been by my side through the ups and downs until now.” “I also thank the agency staff at NH EMG who have given me reliable support so that I can promote well,” he said. This 32-year-old man then explained his reasons for parting with the agency that had raised his name. “After much thought and discussion, I have decided to part ways with NH EMG who has been my agent for more than 10 years. I worry a lot about whether I can forge a new path well. However, it won’t change the fact that I’m U-Kiss’ Soohyun, so please support not only me but all the members who are doing their best in their own activities,” he said. At the end of the letter, Soohyun asked fans for support in celebrating another dream. “I will work harder to make my dreams come true and towards what I want to protect, so please show lots of support. Take care of your health and make sure to eat well,” U-Kiss’ Soohyun wrote at the end of his farewell letter.
