Baekhyun Second EP, Delight
On Monday (5/25/2020), Baekyun released his second extended play, Delight, at 18:00 KST. The album features seven tracks with various R&B subgenres, and is available in four versions: Cinnamon, Honey, Mint, and Chemistry. In this album, the song “Candy” is the title track. The track has a catchy melody and instrumentation. The songwriter Kenzie wrote the meaningful lyrics, while the music was produced by Mike Daley, Mitchell Owens, DEEZA, and Adrian McKinnon, and arranged by Yoo Yeong-jin. The second track, “R U Ridin?” is a love letter to the hip-hop genre with chill, trap-based music and a rich melody, while the third song, “Bunge,” plays more with piano. “Poppin” is another urban R&B hip-hop song in the album, and “Underwater” is more dreamy and slow. The track “Ghost” is revealed to be an alternative R&B song, and the last track, “Love Again,” closed the album with a contemporary R&B feel. All of Baekhyun’s songs in the album feature a poetic lyrics, mostly talking about happiness and longing for love, as well as sadness and enduring the hardships of separation. Since this is Baekhyun’s second solo album after the release of City Lights in 2019, it’s no wonder the album got a proud achievement. Baekhyun swept the charts with his second mini-album, both on the digital and physical sales charts. Already, Delight sold more than 730,000 copies in the pre-sale system. The album also ranked first on pre-order sites such as Hanteo, Synnara, Yes24, and Kyobo charts. The main song “Candy” also ranked first in Melon, Vibe, Genie, and Momople. Aside from the title track, other songs in the album such as “Bungee” and “Love Again” also ranked high in the charts, as well. As a result, Delight ranked at #1 in 68 different countries on the iTunes Top Album Chart. This chart includes the United States, Canada, France, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Australia, and Indonesia. In China, the album also ranked first on the QQ Music digital album sales chart. Delight was certified double-platinum within 3 hours and 38 minutes of its release. This made Baekhyun the first Korean artist of the year to be certified double-platinum on QQ Music. This solo album also ranked first on Kugou Music and Kuwo Music. Once again, Baekhyun proves his power since the release of City Lights in October last year, which also successfully broke records by selling more than half a million copies in 2019.
Background Release
After his successful solo debut in July 2019 with City Lights, Baekhyun began preparing for a second solo album. It was even reported that he was involved in various aspects of the production process. The news of Baekhyun’s comeback was confirmed by SM Entertainment, along with the release date of the EP in late May. The album’s title was also released on May 6, 2020.. After confirming, the teasers and mood-sampler videos for the album were released through EXO’s official social media accounts by SM Entertainment. The names of the album’s producers were also revealed on May 13, 2020, and included the names of various South Korean and American producers such as Kenzie, Mike Daley, Omega Deez, and Colde. The physical and digital album along with title track, “Candy”, was finally released on May 25 at 6 PM KST, and became a huge success in South Korea and other countries.
