BTS Postpones Military Enlistment to 2022
On December 1, 2020, the South Korean government made a new constitution that gave permission to K-pop idols like BTS to postpone their military enlistment. The South Korean government provides requirements for those K-pop idols who have achievements in culture and art fields. These requirements prevail over the oldest member of BTS, Kim Seok-jin. Jin got a deferment for military enlistment when he was supposed to enlist in 2020 through 2021, but the government gave him two more years. This statement appeared after BTS’ first English single, “Dynamite,” managed to place at the top position on Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, making them the first K-pop group to do so.

It started when there was an analyst of Leading Investment and Securities. Yoo Seong-man stated that BTS would enlist in 2022. Knowing the rumors, Big Hit Labels (now known as HYBE) gave their statement and asked fans to not make a conclusion about the unclear news. Then, on September 9, 2021, there was a confluence held to discuss several amendments about the mandatory constitutions named “Military Service Act” by the subcommittee of the South Korean National Defense Commission. They discussed the idea of BTS’ military service exemption which was proposed by Yoo Sang Hyun in June 2021. They said that it was possible for BTS to postpone their military enlistment until the age of 30. Even if the news or laws are validated, there’s a possibility that BTS will be exempt from military service.
